How does someone spend almost 50 years in the same profession? Clearly, they must like what they do and do it well. Add to that a strong conviction that retirement is a shortcut to the grave. But what might not be as obvious, it requires building a balanced life that provides joy outside of work as well. So, I’m going to tell you about the things that bring me joy when I’m not bringing joy to your investments.
Forty years ago, with no prior experience, Joanne and I along with our 13-year-old daughter, Jen, decided to feed our adventurous genes and headed west in a pop-up camper with no itinerary. Five months later we returned after 17,000 miles and 17 National Parks. That began a lifetime of taking every opportunity to “See the USA.” We have visited all 48 contiguous states.
More recently, when sports activities seemed to always end in injuries, we turned what had been a casual pleasure into a passion for cycling. Now we plan our camping trips based on the proximity to a cycling trail. And when the weather allows, you will find us almost every weekend on a trail near here.
Fortunately, my role at Alpha Advisors can be done remotely, even before Covid. So, I’m able to double down on what brings me joy.
When was the last time you thought about what brings you joy?
